What Kind of Help Do You Need as a Writer?

After more than 50 years in the publishing world — and many hundreds of one-on-one interviews with writers at writers conferences all over the U.S. and Canada — I’m convinced Christian writers need help at several levels.

What do I really want to say?

Many writers show up at conferences with only a vague idea of what they want to write about. By God’s grace I have been able to help them clarify their vision, understand what approach to take, what the opportunities are, and give them specific guidelines for achieving their writing goals. Writers who came to the interview obviously confused left with a smile on their face and writing goals clearly established. My greatest joy is to then see their book in print — or them become an article writer for significant publications.

What skill development will help me achieve my goal?

Most writers I’ve met, even journalism graduates, need help with skill development. A writing coach can either help writers establish skill development goals or become the resource writers need to improve their skills. A writing coach may also guide writers to unique opportunities for skill development. I’ve spent 25 years as agent providing specific insight into skill development needs and opportunities. Rather than rewrite a manuscript, like many editors do, my focus has been on providing guidance in skill development. Many times that approach has helped writers totally rewrite one or more chapters, or rearrange chapters to focus on providing a life-changing message.

How could a writing coach help me get beyond writing an article or book to being published?

As a writing coach who has written hundreds of article for newspapers and magazines — and written a number of books published by traditional publishers — I can provide the hard-to-gain insights into market opportunities. Yes, interviews with editors and agents at writers conferences may provide the basics and opportunities needed for publication, but only a writing coach can take the time to actually coach writers in the process.

Where do agents and writing coaches fit in?

Experienced agents provide truly valuable services and are necessary for gaining access to publishers. Each agent brings a specific skill set based on their experience in the publishing world. An experienced writing coach can be a writer’s guide in the search for an agent. That’s where my services as writing coach are enriched by 25 years as a literary agent and participation in agent panels at writers conferences.
