News: Letting Go of the Goodness Gospel

From Good to GraceWhen Christine Hoover’s first book, The Church Planting Wife, was released by Moody Publishing, editors at two other large publishers took notice. Suddenly she was an author in demand because of her skill as a writer on an important topic. But when she developed a proposal for what she wanted to write in her second book, her publisher and one other publisher decided it was not for them. That left Baker Books in the running—and they issued a contract for it.

So what did Moody Publishing pass up? Here’s what Emily T. Wierenga wrote in her endorsement: “A song of freedom for the world-weary woman.” And Kelly Matte wrote, “This book is full of wisdom, and as you read it, your soul will breathe a deep sigh of relief.” Finally, Jess Connolly wrote: “Christine has written the book that I believe women in our generation are really dying to read.”

The back cover helps us understand the enthusiasm for From Good to Grace.

“So many of us feel as if we do not do enough and, in fact, are not enough. We try hard to be good—a good friend, mom, wife, Christian, employee, or ministry leader—hoping for that ‘atta-girl’ from God, some heavenly assertion that we matter. In the process, we find ourselves living by a lesser gospel: the gospel of goodness. It’s a gospel without grace, and in the end, it’s good for nothing.

“With compelling illustrations from her own life and from Scripture, Christine Hoover helps you start asking,’What does God want for me’ before asking,’What does God want from me?’ You’ll find yourself breathing a sigh of relief at the powerful message of freedom and hope. Rather than serving God out of obligation or duty, you’ll be compelled to love and serve God with great joy.”

While the message of grace has been treated by at least three important male authors, this book is designed for women still struggling with being good enough for God and others. I could see this book as a great small group or women’s retreat study, especially if led by Christine Hoover.
